How to use NTFS compression feature on Windows 10

Windows 10 comes with a new feature, called New Technology File System (NTFS) file system, which is designed to decrease the file size and save up space while remaining normal access without needing a manual decompression.

However, activating NTFS compression night have a bad impact on performance. Even when you don’t need to use additional steps, the feature still has to decompress and then recompress files every time you access them, which will require additional resources.

For whatever your situation can be, there are at least two ways to enable NTFS compression on your Windows 10 computer. You can easily use compression at the file level or even compress the entire drive.

In this post today, we will show you steps to compress files to free up space on your hard disk without installing any third party apps for help.

Steps to compress files with NTFS file compression

Using the NTFS file compression is the easiest way to reduce the file size without having to compress the entire drive since the process is handled automatically without affecting the performance of your computer.

To compress files and folders with NTFS on your Windows 10 PC, simply follow these steps below:

  1. Open File Explorer on your Windows
  2. Go to the folder that you want to store compressed files.
  3. Click on Home button > choose New folder button.
  4. Enter a name for the folder and hit Enter.
  5. Right-click the created folder and choose Properties option.
  6. Click on General tab > Advanced button.
  7. Under the “Compress or Encrypt attributes” section, you need to check Compress contents to save disk space option.
  8. Click on Apply button.
  9. In the “Confirm Attribute Changes” dialog, click on Apply changes to this folder, and files option.

10. Hit OK button to confirm.

After you complete these steps, NTFS file compression will then be enabled in the folder to reduce the size of files you save into this location.

The steps listed above also work to compress a folder and a single file.

Steps to compress files with NTFS drive compression

Aside from shrinking files and folders individually, you can also use the NTFS feature to compress a drive of your computer.

If you want to give NTFS compression a try on a hard drive, then follow these steps below:

  • Open File Explorer on your computer
  • Click on This PC icon from the left pane.
  • Under the “Devices and drives” section, right-click on the storage that you want to compress, and choose Properties
  • Click on Compress this drive to save disk space

  • Click on Apply
  • In the “Confirm Attribute Changes” section, choose Apply changes to drive, subfolders and files
  • Click on the OK

After you complete the steps, NTFS will enable compression inside the drive. You can also use compression on a drive with or without files, but it must not be empty. NTFS will perform the process of making the files smaller, so it might end up taking a lot of time.
