Super Mario Run hits more than 40 million downloads in just four days of availability

Super Mario Run caused a flurry of excitement among fans as it made its debut on iOS on December 15. Nintendo’s automatic runner game has quickly turned into a craze on its first day availability with more than 10 million downloads worldwide, beating the record-breaking Pokémon game in terms of day one downloads, thereby hitting the top downloaded apps in 80 countries.

It seems that those numbers won’t stop. According to the Nintendo, Super Mario Run saw more than 40 million downloads in just four days of availability, beating the iOS App Store for most downloads over the same time period. According to the latest figures, the US was a large contributor to those 40 million downloads, taking up 11 million downloads of the total. The UK accounted for 1.5 million downloads, followed by Japan with 7.5 million. However, Nintendo has not specified how many users have actually bought the game, as users need to pay 9.99 USD to access full features after an initial free download.

According to app analytics firms, Super Mario Run generated revenues of 21 million USD in four days opening weekend. However, players seem to spend less time with Super Mario Run than they did with Pokémon Go. The average play time is just about 15 minutes and 30 seconds per session.

Super Mario Run features a mustached plumber dashing and jumping through fast courses to collect coins and make it to the flag at the end. The game includes two single player modes, but it will require an always-on internet connection dues to security issues. Nintendo has just added a new mode called “Friendly Run”, where users can challenge their friends list.

Super Marion Run has received mostly negative reviews from users worldwide, as the average rating is hardly over two stars. Criticism of the game mostly comes from its $9.99 price tag. Many users say that the game doesn’t offer enough given how it is priced.
