How to make custom sounds or ringtones on your Android phone

Don’t you like the same ringtone since it’s an annoying coworker at the room? Or simply you don’t like the old sounds coming with your phone? Easy as pie! Here are options available, and once you get the hang of them, the world of ringtone is yours. This post will show you options to make custom sounds and ringtones directly on your Android phone.

How to set ringtones using the Zedge app

There are many places that you can find ringtones, but the simplest one is Zedge. Zedge is a customization app that can personalize your Android device phone in several ways, but most notably with the Ringtone and Wallpaper galleries. Zedge can even streamline the process, allowing you to download and set your ringtone without any difficulty!

Browsing the app is simple when you can browse by category or search for specific something. Once you find your desired ringtone, here’s how to do so:

  1. Tap on Set in the middle of the details screen.
  2. Tap on Set Ringtone.
  3. Choose Allow to allow Zedge app to download the ringtone to your phone.
  1. Tap on Settings to go to the page where you need to allow Zedge to modify system settings.
  2. Select Allow modify system settings.
  3. Tap the arrow button to go back to Zedge.

You will now see a notification at the bottom, letting you know that the ringtone has been applied. Should you want to set a ringtone to a specific contact, you can choose the available options from the same Set menu.

How to add a ringtone file to the Ringtones folder

If you already have a great custom ringtone and you just want to add to your phone, then you just need a file manager app to bring it into the Ringtones section. Android phones have now been pre-installed file managers out of the box, but if not, you can download one from the Google Play Store. In this post, we use Solid Explorer.

  1. On your phone, press firmly on your custom ringtone (usually located in the Downloads folder or whichever local folder you saved it). After that, tap on more ringtones if you want to copy multiple sounds at once.
  2. Choose the Copy icon (two documents at the top of each other).
  3. Swipe in from the left edge to open up the location menu.
  4. Tap on Internal Memory.
  5. Choose Ringtones folder. If you wish to set the sound as a text tone, simply tap on the Notifications folder.
  6. Tap on Paste option

Now, go to Settings app and you will see the new ringtones immediately. If it doesn’t, just reboot the phone. After the reboot, you will the new ringtones in the list of available ringtones from the Sounds menu on your phone.

How to set a custom ringtone on your Android device

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Tap on Sound. If there is not a section with Sounds in the title, you can type “Ringtone” in the search bar at the top of the Settings app.
  3. Choose Phone ringtone.
  4. Tap on the custom ringtone you recently added to the ringtones folder.
  5. Tap OK. If you do not see these options, simply tap on the Back button to quit the ringtone picker.

If the custom ringtone has been properly set, its name will appear underneath Phone ringtone.

How to set a ringtone for a contact

By giving each of your contacts a special ringtone, you will know is calling without the need for grabbing your phone off the charger. It will be useful at many times but especially during your work hours, when answering personal calls.

  1. Open Contacts app on your phone
  2. Select the contact you want to set a custom ringtone for.
  3. Tap on the three-dot icon at the top right corner.
  4. Tap on Set ringtone.
  5. Choose custom ringtone you recently added to the ringtones folder.
  6. Tap OK. If you do not see the option on your device, tap on Back button to quit the ringtone picker.

How to set a custom notification sound on your Android phone

If you already have a text tone you love, you can also add them to the Notifications folder just as the way you added custom ringtones to the Ringtones folder. The process is familiar by now.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Sound. This menu can vary, depending on your phone model. It can be with be Sound and Display, Personalization, or others.
  3. Tap on Default notification sound.
  4. Choose custom notification sound that you added to Notifications folder.
  5. Tap Save. Then, simply tap the Back button to close the sound picker.

If the custom notification sound is properly set, its name will show up underneath Default notification sound.
