How To Use File History Backup On Windows 10

File History in Windows 10 might be the easiest way to start with backing up personal files since it’s a built-in feature.

File History will take all your file’s snapshots and then store them on an external drive connected through USB or home network. File History can build up a library of versions of your documents for you to recover when needed.

Although File History is a pretty important part of any PC backup, it’s just one part. If possible, you should have your files in three places: a copy on your internal hard drive, a local backup for straightaway access and a remote backup.

In case anything goes wrong, the third copy in the remote location is the last resort. The simplest way to perform the remote backup is using online backup service like iDrive.

To start File History in the Windows 10, you need first to open the Settings app and head to Update & Security > Backup.

From there, hook up your external hard drive and then click the “+” near Add a drive in Settings. There is a prompt to select an external drive, and simply choose the one you need. File History is now archiving all your data. You will see an on/off slider under a new “Automatically back up my files” heading.

File History on Windows 10, by default, will back up all the folders in User folder in C drive, back up your files every hour, as well as keep copies of your files. If you want to change any settings, just click on More options under the on/off slider.

You will be taken to the next screen, which includes Backup optionsLook at the top right, you can see an option to do a manual backup. Below that are drop-down menus that allow you to adjust how often you want to run your backup with choices, from every 10 minutes to once a day. If your backup drive is on low space, then you can avoid storing File History bug by clicking on the drop-down menu under Keep my backups and choose Until space is needed

To add a folder, simply click on the “+” icon under Back up these folders. If you want to remove a folder, scroll down to find it, click on it and select Remove.

On the bottom of this screen, you can also create a list of folders to exclude backing up to the currently selected drive and you want to choose another one. But you are only able to have a backup drive at a time.

After File History is enabled, you can easily access older versions of a file by using this handy trick. All you need is right-clicking on a file in File Explorer, and choose Restore previous versions. It’s similar to right-clicking on the file and navigating to the Properties > Previous Versions popup window.
