How to Set Default Web Browser in Windows

How do you feel when you click on a link, but an unwanted browser loads it? It’s not an enjoyable experience, right. So, to avoid this experience, you should set your favorite browser as the default browser on your Windows computer. Here’s how to do it.

Set Default Browser from the Browser

Most of the browsers prompt you to set it them as your default browser. Here is how that looks in it. If you don’t see the notification from the browser, simply open settings or preferences in the browser, and there is an option to set it as your default.

In Firefox browser, click on the menu button locating at the top right window (the three horizontal lines), and then select the “Options” command. From there, you can see the default browser setting, which locates at the top of the Preference page.

If you are using Chrome browser, simply click on the menu button at the top right corner (the three vertical dots), and select the “Settings” command. Scroll down until you’ll see the “Default Browser” section. Click on it to set Chrome as your default browser.

In Microsoft Edge browser, just click on the menu button at the top right corner (the three horizontal dots), choose “Settings” command. Simply click on the “Change My Default” button at the top.

There is also an option to set a default browser directly in the Windows settings. It’s slightly different, depending on the browser you’re using on your Windows 10 or Windows 7 computer.

How to Set a Default Browser in Windows 10

In Windows 10 version, you can easily set the default browser in the Settings app. All you need is heading to Settings > Apps > Default Apps.

  • Under the “Web Browser” section, click on the button. The button is named by the browser is currently the default on your computer.
  • You will now see a list of all installed browsers on your Windows 10. Simply click the one that you wish to set as your default browser.
  • The button will then change to show the selected browser.

From now, whenever you click on a link, your desired browser will open it.

How to Set a Default Browser in Windows 7

Setting the default browser is slightly different in Windows 7 version. Go to Control Panel > Default Programs.

  • From there, click on the “Set your default programs” section.
  • There will be a list of programs for you to configure as default apps for several things. Choose the browser that you wish to set as the default.
  • Next, click on the “Set this program as default” link to set it as the default browser. If you want more control, just click on the second button to view the different defaults that allow setting for the program.
  • You will now see a long list of extensions associating with that browser. If you chose “Set this program as default” option, your computer would automatically associate all the extensions with that browser.
  • Simply tick on boxes next to the extensions that you want to associate with the default browser, or choose “Select All” option at the top. Once done, click on “Save” button to apply these changes.
