How To Recover Microsoft Account Password

If you are not using a password manager, complex passwords might be difficult for you. In case you forget your Microsoft account—which is used for outlook.com, live.com, or even skype.com, although you are not able to recover that same password, you can still recover your account by resetting your password to a new one.

How To Recover Your Microsoft Account Password

Launch any web browser, and then visit the Microsoft Account page. From there, click on “Sign In” option at the top right corner.

Type in your Microsoft account, and then click the “Next” button.

Keep in mind that you might have used any related email account as one of your primary Microsoft account, which includes outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, and even skype.com. Microsoft allows you to sign up for a Microsoft account with external email addresses, but the password for your Microsoft account must be different from the password for an external account.

Now, under password box, click on the “Forgot My Password” section.

From the next screen, select the “I Forgot My Password” option, and click on the “Next” button.

You are now asked to enter some characters that you see onscreen as a security method. Do it and click on “Next” button.

Verify Your Identity With an Email Address or Phone Number

Once you have successfully set up your Microsoft account using an alternative email, choose it from the list, verify your email address, and click on the “Send Code” button.

In case you have a phone number connected to your account, then you can get this code through SMS instead of by your email.

Enter the code attached in the email message, and click on the “Next” button.

Type in your new password (and remember to create a strong one), and confirm your new password. After that, click on the “Next” button.

Your password has successfully been changed. Click on “Next” button one more time to go to the sign in screen, where you can enter your new password for logging in.

Verify Your Identity In Case You Don’t Have an Alternative Email

If you click on “I Don’t Have Any Of These” from the list, Microsoft will send you a security code to another different email address for verification.

Simply type in the email address that you want to get the code, and click on the “Next” button.

Once you get the code, enter it into the field and click on the “Verify” button.

In the following screens, you need to fill out the form with your account information, such as first name and last name, date of birth, emails sent, and so on. Once done, choose “Next” and submit the form.

After submitting the form, Microsoft will then review your information and get back to you within a day to the email you provided for them.

If all your information is correct and your request has been accepted, you will get an email with a step-by-step instruction to reset your password.

In case your request is denied, you have a chance to try two times a day. If you are not able to remember enough information to recover your Microsoft account, we recommend you to create a new account.
