Backup and restore your WhatsApp messages using Google Drive

You usually use WhatsApp for work since it’s popular and easy to use. WhatsApp is also a convenient way to get in touch with friends. You have some important messages and media, but it’d be very bad if all suddenly disappeared. That’s why you should back up your messages, photos, and videos in WhatsApp.

Back up between your Android and iPhone

If you plan on switching from your Android to iPhone and you wish to take your WhatsApp messages, then you’re out of luck. If you back up WhatsApp on your Android phone, you can then use Google Drive. WhatsApp app on Android uses Google Drive for backup and restoration, while the iOS app uses iCloud to do so.

Even when you have Google Drive app on your iPhone, you won’t still be able to restore WhatsApp files backed up on your Android phone.

Backup your WhatsApp chats to Google Drive

Fortunately, WhatsApp can automatically back up and save your messages to your memory on a daily use. You can also back up your chat conversations to Google Drive. In case you accidentally remove WhatsApp app from your phone, your messages can be safe. Make sure to back things up before uninstalling the app.

Google Drive is a great app to back up all your WhatsApp messages. When switching from an Android phone to another Android device, you will have your messages & media files follow you. Here’s how you can back up with Google Drive:

  1. Open WhatsApp from the app drawer.
  2. Tap on the menu icon at the top right, which is the three vertical dots.
  3. Tap on SettingsChats.
  4. Select Chat backup.
  5. Choose Google Drive settings
  6. Tap on Account.
  7. Tap on the account you want to associate with the backup.
  8. Once done, tap on Allow > Back up over.
  9. Select box near “Include videos” to back up video messages.
  10. Tap on Back Up to back up your WhatsApp now.

Once everything’s backed up, you can then restore your chats every time you reinstall the app, no matter the device.

Restore WhatsApp chats from a Google Drive backup

When everything’s backed up, and you have changed phones or need to reinstall WhatsApp, here is how to get all WhatsApp chat messages back.

  1. Open WhatsApp from the app drawer.
  2. Next, verify your phone number when you are asked.
  3. Tap on Restore and choose Next once the restoration is done.
  4. Set up your profile.
  5. Tap on Next in the top right and choose Continue

You can now access your WhatsApp chats on any Android phone installed WhatsApp. Simply sign in your account.

Transfer your WhatsApp messages to a new phone with Google Drive

Suddenly, you are out of luck as your phone is lost, and you have followed the above steps to back up your WhatsApp chats to Google Drive, so all you are moving all your chats over.

  1. Add the same Google account to your new phone to get the backup on your old phone.
  2. Install WhatsApp on your new phone.
  3. Open WhatsApp app from the app drawer.
  4. Tap on Agree and continue.
  5. Verify your phone number.
  6. Tap on Restore and then restore your WhatsApp chat conversations from your Google Drive backup.
  7. Tap on Next to complete the process.
